Dylan Townley-Smith is a living artist living in the stunningly nearly perfect Vancouver, BC. He is an undergrad at The Audain School for Visual Arts at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Dylan's work is hand crafted with care and quality. Dylan's work is satirical and sometimes ironic mainly appropriating from artists like, such as, to name a few. Dylan's paintings have been said to be "Cute, at best." (Jerry Saltz, New York Magazine).  Dylan's recent cigar(ette) holder sculptures  have highlighted the importance  of smoking in today's world.  Coming from a pedagogical standpoint, Dylan's work often questions our sensibility to understand art through satire and wit and irony and parody and humour, and curiosity.

The works of Dylan Townley-Smith have a clear reference to well-known art historical names of the 20th Century. Influenced by the paintings of artists such as Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth, and Alex Colville, Townley-Smith’s approach to painting quietly seeks to create implications of a narrative in a unique manner through key visual queues. He achieves this by depicting obscured yet familiar settings. A front door, a post-it note, a cigarette, these are symbols we are familiar with. The stark and surreal quality of the paintings mimic the uncanny notions of deja vu and recurring dreams. What is going on? Is anybody home? Who died? Where am I, Where are we? With his sculptures as with his paintings, readymade objects are integral to anchoring the work within our world while the gratuitous ‘holders’ are abstracted referential constructions that speak to the ideas around art’s ‘functionality’. Their operational function is implied yet they are nullified by their own existence as an object.Implication is an underlying theme in Townley-Smith’s work as he explores the ideas of the metaphysical aspects of artmaking and its ability to be a starting point for perceptual change. With a strong obsession for the United States of America and its impact/creation of ‘modern’ western social and consumer culture, he strives to understand its nostalgic qualities and its relevance in our contemporary art world.
